US President Joe Biden pardons his son Hunter
US President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he had pardoned his son Hunter Biden, who had been convicted of providing false information during a gun purchase and illegally possessing firearms, in addition to pleading guilty to a federal tax evasion case.
In a statement issued by the White House, Biden said, “Today, I signed a pardon for my son, Hunter… Since taking office, I have committed to not interfering with the decisions of the Department of Justice, and I have kept my promise even as my son was subjected to a selective and unfair trial”.
The White House has repeatedly stressed that Biden won’t pardon or commute the sentences of his son, who is in recovery from drug addiction and has faced continued attacks from Republicans, including former President Donald Trump.
“Any reasonable person who reviews the facts of Hunter’s case will come to the clear conclusion that Hunter was targeted simply because he was my son,” Biden added, expressing hope that the American people would understand the reasons that led him, as a father and as a president, to make this decision.
At a hearing in federal court in Los Angeles in September, Hunter Biden, (54), pleaded guilty to the charges, which could result in a prison sentence of up to 17 years and a fine of up to $1 million.
It’s worth noting, that a final verdict is scheduled for December 16.
