Germany plans to buy four submarines to strengthen its army against Russia
Germany plans to buy four new submarines to boost its military power and help meet NATO security requirements in Europe, a source in the parliamentary budget committee said.
The German Ministry of Defense has requested €4.7 billion in additional spending to purchase U212 CD submarines from German company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.
“We’re studying the proposal to purchase additional submarines with particular attention because of its importance for security policy, but also because of the high value of the money required,” the MP said.
Germany had placed orders for two submarines of the same type as part of a joint project with Norway, which had also ordered submarines.
Berlin is seeking to strengthen its army in the wake of the Russian operation in Ukraine, and has pledged huge sums to enhance its capabilities in light of the growing threats.
But a special spending request had to be submitted for the submarines because they are not included in Germany’s budget for 2024 and beyond.
In its request, the ministry said that Germany “won’t be able to meet NATO’s new requirements to better protect the alliance’s northern flank without the four additional submarines,” Der Spiegel reported.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz leads a minority government until elections expected on February 23.
To secure funding, the governing coalition will need the support of the conservative opposition.
It’s work mentioning that, Germany announced a new military aid to Ukraine worth 650 million Euros.
