The leadership of the Khatam al Anbiya Central Headquarters, affiliated with the Iranian Armed Forces, announced its intention to close the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic, due to what it described as the United States’ failure to adhere to its responsibilities stipulated in the understanding concluded between the two sides, and Israel’s continued attacks on Lebanon.

On Saturday, Iranian state television broadcast a statement from the Khatam al Anbiya Central Headquarters regarding the Strait of Hormuz.

The statement said that the United States had clearly violated its commitments regarding the implementation of the signed understanding, and that Israel continues to violate the ceasefire continuously by continuing its attacks on southern Lebanon and not withdrawing from the area, which prompted Iran to make the decision to close the Strait of Hormuz to shipping traffic.

The statement explained that this step represents the first measure in response to what it considered the United States’ failure to abide by its commitments, adding: “If the aggression continues, additional steps will be planned and implemented to force the aggressor to abide by its commitments”.

On June 14, Iran and the United States announced that they had reached a 14-point understanding, mediated by Pakistan, aimed at ending the war and addressing the differences between the two sides through dialogue and negotiations.

The memorandum of understanding, dubbed the “Islamabad Understanding,” was signed and entered into force on June 18 after being signed electronically by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump.

The agreement includes provisions relating to ending the war, including in Lebanon, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and lifting the US naval blockade on Iran.

Following the signing of the memorandum of understanding, the two sides are expected to begin negotiations within a short period, lasting 60 days, to reach a final agreement on issues including Iran’s nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions.
