Ekrem İmamoğlu, Mayor of Istanbul, published an article in which he touched on several sensitive issues, most notably those related to immigrants and his future political career.

İmamoğlu’s article comes in light of the hidden conflict arising between him and the head of his Republican People’s Party (CHP), and the former presidential candidate, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.

İmamoğlu began his article, which he published in the weekly Oxygen newspaper, by lamenting the inability of the opposition in Türkiye to achieve the people’s aspiration for change, transformation, renewal, and getting rid of the current government.

İmamoğlu stressed in his article that it’s necessary to draw lessons from mistakes in the next stage, and establish a political concept that meets the people’s expectations of change.

He added, “For this, we need new approaches, language, and cadres… In short, we need a new bloc and a new politics”.

The mayor of Istanbul also called for changing the law on political parties in Türkiye, so that political parties in the country would get rid of the power of its leadership and the authoritarian figures surrounding them.

In his article, İmamoğlu devoted a wide space to his Republican People’s party, which is witnessing these days a silent and escalating struggle over leadership between one front led by the mayor of Istanbul and another led by the party’s leader, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.

İmamoğlu stressed that the success of the Republican people in meeting the demands and needs of the next stage and establishing a democratic political life depends on the party renewing itself first.

İmamoğlu directed implicit criticism to the party’s leader, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, in light of his talk about the democratic political leader who doesn’t deal with the party he heads as if it were the property of his ancestors, and is ready to resign if he does not succeed in leading the party and bringing it to the required level.

It seems that Kılıçdaroğlu rejected the demands for his resignation from the party leadership.

İmamoğlu added that Türkiye today needs a new future vision, “We will establish the new march of Türkiye”.

On the immigrant issue, İmamoğlu said that waves of irregular migration disturb the balance of Turkish societies.

He called for an effective fight against irregular migration, but in the light of humanitarian measures, as he described it.

The mayor of Istanbul concluded his article by saying that he impatiently awaits Türkiye’s leadership to a new march in the second centenary of the Republic, stressing that he will continue during the next stage to share with public opinion the approaches and principles of the actions they are doing in this context.
