US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the United States will respond firmly and launch a new strike against Iran if it attempts to restart its nuclear program.

Trump’s remarks came during a conversation with reporters on the sidelines of the NATO summit in the Netherlands.

Trump directly indicated that Washington wouldn’t hesitate to take military action if Tehran attempted to resume development of its nuclear facilities, affirming absolutely the possibility of a new strike.

At the same summit, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised President Trump, describing him as a strong man, and a man of peace, highlighting his efforts to defuse regional tensions.

In joint statements with Trump, Rutte said, “We appreciate your decisive action on Iran… You’re a strong man, but you also seek peace… Your success in achieving a ceasefire between Israel and Iran represents an important step for the entire world”.

Rutte also noted Trump’s successes in pushing NATO countries to increase their defense spending, with most countries, with the exception of Spain, agreeing to allocate 5% of their GDP to military spending, which Rutte described as an achievement not achieved in decades.

NATO leaders’ reactions to the airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities were mixed. Some called for calm and avoiding escalation, while all emphasized that Iran’s acquisition of a nuclear weapon poses a major threat to international security.

President Trump recently succeeded in pushing Iran and Israel to agree to a ceasefire, which remains in place despite the tensions that preceded it.
