Former head of Israeli military intelligence: This is why we attacked Iran?
Retired major general, Amos Yadlin, former head of Israeli military intelligence, emphasized that Israel’s goal in the war on Iran was never to overthrow the ruling regime, but rather focused on specific national security objectives.
In an interview with CNN, Yadlin explained that the primary goal of the Israeli operations is to destroy Iran’s nuclear capabilities, reduce its ballistic missile capabilities, and stop missile launchers targeting Israel, in addition to creating better conditions for negotiating a new agreement with Iran.
Yadlin added that the use of air power is Israel’s only reliant tool against Iran, noting that a political regime cannot be changed using airstrikes alone.
He said that any real change in the Iranian regime requires ground intervention, something neither Israel nor the United States wants.
Yadlin indicated that real change in Iran will come from within, noting that approximately 80% of the Iranian people reject the current regime.
He said, “If free and fair elections were held, Iranians would vote to overthrow the Islamic regime led by Ayatollah Khomeini”.
This statement comes amid recent tensions in the region, with Israel and Iran agreeing to a ceasefire after 12 days of escalation.
The ceasefire was brokered by US President Donald Trump, which went into effect on June 24, was pressured on both sides to de-escalate tensions, particularly after US strikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities.
