The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights: The Sweida issue is in the hands of the Americans… Seven clauses in an agreement between Israel and Syria
The UK based, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced that Israel and Syria have reached a ceasefire agreement, brokered by the United States, which transfers the conflict in Sweida Governorate to the US administration for follow-up implementation.
In a post on X, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights revealed the most important provisions of this agreement, which include:
- The Sweida Governorate issue was handed over to the United States, which will oversee the implementation of the agreement.
- A complete withdrawal of tribal forces and Syrian General Security forces to beyond the Druze villages in the area.
- Druze factions conduct combing operations in villages to ensure they are free of tribal forces and Syrian government agencies.
- Forming local councils from the people of Sweida to assume responsibility for providing civil services.
- Establish a specialized committee to document violations and submit reports to the US side.
- Disarming heavy weapons from the Quneitra and Dara’a regions, with the formation of local security committees composed of residents of those areas, provided they do not carry heavy weapons.
- Preventing any institution or organization affiliated with the Syrian government from entering Sweida, with only United Nations organizations allowed to operate in the area.
This announcement comes after a meeting between US Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack and officials from both Syrian and Israeli sides in Paris, aimed at calming escalating tensions between the two sides.
The southern Syrian province of Sweida has been witnessing deteriorating security and humanitarian conditions since mid-July, due to the outbreak of violent clashes between Bedouin tribes and Druze fighters, alongside Syrian security forces.
These clashes resulted in the deaths of more than 814 people, including women, children, and members of medical and media personnel, in addition to the injury of more than 903 others, according to statistics from the Syrian Network for Human Rights.
In a related development, Israel launched several airstrikes on southern Syria and Damascus, allegedly to protect the Druze community, further complicating the security situation in the region.
Despite the Syrian government’s multiple announcements of ceasefires and truce agreements, and the deployment of security forces to impose control, clashes continue in some areas.
