A large number of civilians have taken refuge at the Russian Hmeimim air base in western Syria, where after clashes erupted last week.

The coastal region, which is predominantly inhabited by Alawites, has witnessed security tensions since last Wednesday, with violent clashes between public security forces and groups linked to the former regime.

Reports have been made of violations against civilians, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of people.

At the same time, the security authorities in Syria announced the arrest of groups out of control for committing violations.

Under these circumstances, the Hmeimim base allowed Syrian civilians to enter as a safe haven, as the footage shows the displaced, most of whom are women and children, present in the base’s facilities and in the open air.

The number of displaced people inside the base is estimated to be in the hundreds, and the Russian military has provided a field kitchen, a medical center, and tents, but the humanitarian situation remains difficult because the base isn’t equipped to receive such a large number of people.

According to reports, the Syrian government provided relief aid to civilians inside the base on Sunday.

In another context, the Kremlin expressed its deep concern over the tense situation in Syria, stressing the need to deal with it urgently, including through the United Nations, in order to normalize the situation.
