The Israeli army explains why did Iron Dome fail to intercept Hezbollah rocket that hit Majdal Shams at the occupied Golan heights?
An Israeli military preliminary investigation revealed why the Iron Dome system failed to intercept the rocket that hit Majdal Shams in the occupied Golan on Saturday, killing 12 people.
According to the results of the investigation announced by IDF Radio, no interceptor rockets were fired due to the complex terrain, and it wasn’t possible to give a longer warning allowing the rocket to be intercepted and escape to shelters.
The radio added, “The IDF’s preliminary investigation shows that there was no problem in detecting the rocket… It was detected immediately launched and the alarm activated in Majdal Shams accordingly”.
However, it wasn’t possible to activate the warning earlier and give more time for defense, given the short distance traveled by the missile.
According to an Israeli military source, the time from triggering the alarm to the rocket landing was about 20 seconds, but the townspeople talk otherwise about only a few seconds.
The results of the investigation explained, “There was difficulty in objecting… No interceptor missiles were fired from Iron Dome, mainly because of the complex terrain,” the rocket crossed Mount Hermon.
“The rocket flew at low altitude and other reasons made interception difficult,” IDF Radio said.
Israel says Hezbollah was behind the rocket launch, but the Iran-backed party denies this.
