Russia Foreign Minister: The complete destruction of Hamas as Netanyahu wants is impossible
Russia Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the complete destruction of Hamas, Prime Israel Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s condition for a ceasefire, an unrealistic goal, adding that a truce in Gaza remained elusive.
This came in press statements made by Lavrov after his visit to Malaysia on Sunday.
“There are still no prospects for stopping this bloodshed… In response to calls for a ceasefire, Israel through Prime Minister Netanyahu said they wouldn’t stop until Hamas was completely destroyed… In my opinion, and many of my colleagues share this view, it’s unrealistic to completely destroy an existing organization that has sufficient capacity and support, including in the Muslim world”.
Lavrov noted that some countries are trying to prepare new settlement proposals that provide for a gradual cessation of violence, since the Israel reject an immediate ceasefire.
“Some Arabic countries, Egypt and Qatar, specifically work with the Americans, and they also hold meetings with the Israelis… It’s not entirely true, in my opinion, that the Palestinians themselves remain excluded from the contacts that would ultimately determine their fate,” he said, stressing that Russia will continue to contribute to the restoration of Palestinian unity.
