The FBI confirmed at a news conference late Saturday that the shooting targeting Republican candidate Donald Trump was an assassination attempt.

The FBI says that Thomas Matthew Crooks, the gunman who tried to assassinate former US President Donald Trump, was a 20-year-old registered Republican who had previously made a small contribution to a Democratic-allied group, according to public records.

Thomas’s father, Matthew Crooks, said when CNN contacted him early Sunday that he was trying to figure out “what the hell is going on” but would “wait until I talk to law enforcement” before talking about his son.

Crooks lived in the Pittsburgh suburb of Bethel Park, about 35 miles south of Trump’s rally, and graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022, according to a local media report and a video of the school announcing the start of the school year.

Crooks was registered to vote as a Republican, according to a list in the Pennsylvania voter database that matched his name, age and Bethel Park’s address that law enforcement was searching for early Sunday.

FEC (Individual Contribution Research) records show that a donor, listed as Thomas Crooks of the same title, had given $15 to a Democratic-allied political action committee called the Progressive Turnout Project in January 2021.

Crooks shot Trump from the roof of a nearby building outside the rally’s security perimeter, before being killed by Secret Service agents, according to law enforcement officials.

One of the election rally attendees was reportedly killed and two others were seriously injured.
