Senegal: Oil production begins at the country’s first offshore platform
Australia’s Woodside Energy has announced the start of oil production on Senegal’s first offshore platform, joining the country among the crude oil producers.
CEO Meg O’Neill called the extraction of oil from the Sangomar field, about 100 kilometers off Dakar, an important milestone and a historic day for Woodside as well as for Senegal.
The project aims to produce 100,000 barrels of oil per day, and also contains natural gas, of which the Australian company has a share of “82%”, while the Senegalese Petrosen company owns the rest.
In addition to the Sangomar field, Senegal has a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, the Ahmeim al Kabir field shared with Mauritania, which is expected to start production in the third quarter of this year.
Senegal hopes its oil and gas sector will generate billions of dollars in revenue and help accelerate the country’s economic transformation.
