The British economy contracted by 0.1% during April
Britain’s gross domestic product shrank by 0.1% in April on a monthly basis, affected by the fallout from the US-Israeli war on Iran.
According to the UK’s Office for National Statistics said in a statement on Friday that GDP contracted by 0.1% in April, after growing by 0.3% in March 2026 and 0.4% in February 2026.
The office data showed that a 0.2% decline in services sector activity was the main driver of the contraction, while a 0.1% increase in construction sector output partially mitigated the impact of this decline.
In contrast, the production sector recorded zero growth during the month.
The office attributed part of this decline to the repercussions of the war on Iran, noting that the cancellation of a number of sporting events in the Middle East negatively affected the activity of British companies operating in this field.
This war, which has now exceeded one hundred days, has caused disruptions to global energy supplies, leading to renewed inflationary pressures around the world.
