The commander of the US backed Syria Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi announced his readiness for dialogue with all sides, including Türkiye.

In a video speech posted on the official SDF website, Abdi stressed, “We’re ready for dialogue with all forces, including Türkiye, and we will support any dialogue that leads to a cessation of hostilities and a political solution to the crisis”.

These statements come at a time when Syrian-Turkish relations are witnessing new attempts at rapprochement.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently expressed his desire to restore relations with Syria and meet with President Bashar al Assad.

On the other hand, Türkiye both PKK and PYD, which are part of the SDF, are considered terrorist organizations and regularly target them in northern Syria and Iraq.

Ankara justifies its military operations in northern Syria and its control of several cities as aiming to keep the Kurdish Units away from its borders.

The Syrian government rejects the presence of any separatist entity on its territory, as the Kurdish units control areas in northeastern Syria with US support.

The Syrian President Bashar al Assad stated: “We say to the American puppet groups … The American won’t protect you and you will be a tool in his hand to barter”.
