Russian defense ministry announces launching a nuclear submarine

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday the launching of the Arkhangelsk nuclear submarine in the port of Severodvinsk, at the factory of Sevmash company, affiliated with the Russian United Shipbuilding Corporation.

According to the issued statement, the landing ceremony took place in Severodvinsk on November 29, under the auspices of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov.

Developing Arkhangelsk submarine started on March 19, 2015, and it was built according to project 885 “Yasen-M”of the St. Petersburg Naval Engineering Bureau “Malakhit”.

Its complex structure, which includes more than 400 components from all over Russia, has been assembled in the Sevmash workshops for almost the previous eight years.

The new submarine carries a single water-cooled reactor and features a lightweight and robust structure.

It’s also equipped with the latest sonar system, and the torpedo tubes were moved from their traditional location to the left and starboard sides.

The submarine’s main armament is high-precision cruise missiles located in eight vertical silos in the middle section of the submarine, according to Russian media reports.

These submarines have an operating depth of 500-520 meters, with a maximum depth of 600 meters.

The submarine has the ability to operate autonomously for up to 100 days, and the crew numbers just over 60 people, the majority of whom are officers and midshipmen serving on contract.
