A recent poll revealed that only one in six Germans would be willing to take up arms without hesitation to defend their country in the event of a military conflict.

The poll, conducted by the Forsa Institute for Opinion Research on behalf of the German media network Deutschland, showed that 16% of respondents said they would definitely fight, while 22% said they would probably do so.

A clear majority of 59% said they would probably or definitely not be prepared to defend Germany with weapons if it were attacked; This percentage rises to 72% among women.

At the same time, more than a quarter of respondents 27% said they considered a military attack on Germany within the next five years to be very likely or somewhat likely.

Meanwhile 59% of German respondents believed that Germany would likely have to provide military assistance to another NATO member state under its joint defense commitments during that period.

The survey included 1,000 Germans on July 28 and 29, amid a heated debate about the country’s defense readiness.
