Humanitarian aid trucks begin entering the Gaza Strip through the Kerem Shalom crossing
Egyptian media reported on Sunday that aid trucks began entering the Gaza Strip from the Kerem Shalom crossing between the Strip and Israel, for the first time since the start of the military operation announced by Israel, in the southern city of Rafah on May 6.
According to the information announced by Egyptian media, humanitarian aid trucks entered the Gaza Strip through the Kerem Shalom crossing, including 4 fuel trucks.
Local Palestinian sources said that aid trucks are departing from the Egyptian side from the Rafah crossing along the border with the Gaza Strip to the Kerem Shalom crossing.
The Palestinian sources stated that the aid is inspected on the Israeli side of the Kerem Shalom crossing before it sets off to the Palestinian side of the crossing.
Trucks will be delivered to the United Nations, and from there they will set off through the Philadelphia axis along the Palestinian-Egyptian border to the “Tel al Sultan” area west of Rafah, and from there they will enter the depth of the sector through the coastal “al Rashid” street.
The sources pointed out that the number of trucks expected to enter the Gaza Strip reaches 200 trucks, each carrying between 15 and 20 tons of aid, and 4 of them loaded with fuel.
On Friday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi agreed during a phone call with his US counterpart Joe Biden to deliver aid to the United Nations at the Kerem Shalom crossing temporarily, until a legal mechanism is reached to restart the Rafah crossing in the southern Gaza Strip from the Palestinian side.
On May 7, Israel took control of the Palestinian side with the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, a day after Israel announced the start of a military operation in the city, and Cairo responded by refusing to coordinate with Israel on the crossing, accusing it of causing a humanitarian disaster in the Strip.
As a result of the war and Israeli restrictions, Gazans, especially the Gaza and northern governorates, are on the brink of famine, with severe supplies of food, water, medicine and fuel scarce, with some two million Palestinians displaced from the enclave, which has been besieged by Israel for 18 years.
