France: We lifted sanctions on Syria after getting what we wanted!
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot confirmed that the decision to lift sanctions on Syria came after Paris met some important demands on several issues.
In statements to the Saudi Al Arabiya/Al Hadath, Barrot indicated that France had emphasized to the Syrian authorities the need to ensure that the terrorist organization ISIS wouldn’t return.
In a related context, the French Foreign Minister affirmed that his country seeks to achieve ambitious results during the “Two-State Solution” conference called for by Saudi Arabia.
He also stressed France’s categorical rejection of allowing Iran to acquire nuclear weapons in order to preserve its national security.
Meanwhile, the French Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday that the European Union intends to lift further sanctions on Syria in the coming period, with the aim of revitalizing the country’s economy.
The Foreign Ministry explained that Europeans noted tangible progress in Syria’s democratic transition, affirming the EU’s continued support for a political transition that includes all components of Syrian society.
This decision comes after the European Union began lifting economic sanctions on Syria to support recovery and reconstruction efforts after years of conflict.
On May 20, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced that EU foreign ministers had agreed to lift the economic sanctions imposed since the beginning of Assad’s rule.
For its part, the new Syrian authorities have been working since assuming power in December 2024 to stimulate the economy with the aim of launching a recovery and reconstruction phase, estimated to cost approximately $400 billion.
