Ankara intends to establish two bases in Syria
Turkish media reported that Ankara plans to establish military bases inside Syrian territory as part of its ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and enhance security in the region.
Turkish security sources, according to Sputnik, indicated that Türkiye intends to provide extensive support to the Syrian authorities in organizing the army and security forces, with the aim of enhancing stability and combating terrorist organizations such as ISIS.
Sources also indicated that the Turkish army will establish an air base and a naval base on Syrian territory to enhance its capabilities in confronting extremist groups.
According to available information, periodic meetings are currently being held between five countries, including Türkiye, to discuss counterterrorism mechanisms, although the identities of the other countries participating in these negotiations have not been revealed.
In a related context, the upcoming meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his former US counterpart, Donald Trump, is expected to contribute to addressing several important issues related to the Syrian crisis.
It’s worth noting that Turkish forces are currently concentrated primarily in northern Syria, while Russia has only one naval base in the city of Tartus on the Syrian coast.
In a significant diplomatic development, President Erdoğan recently held an unannounced meeting in Istanbul with Syrian transitional President Ahmed al Sharaa.
Turkish reports indicated that the meeting was also attended by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defense Minister Yaşar Güler, and National Intelligence Organization (MIT) head Ibrahim Kalin.
