Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced that Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani has received an official invitation to visit Russia soon, as part of strengthening bilateral relations and discussing regional issues of common interest.

Lavrov’s statement came during a press conference held in Moscow alongside his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, following intensive talks between the two sides on the Syrian issue and regional developments.

Lavrov said, “Based on an initiative put forward during a previous meeting we held in Antalya last April, in the presence of Minister al Shaibani, an official invitation was extended to him to visit Moscow to continue the constructive dialogue”.

For his part, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan affirmed that his country will continue coordination with Russia to ensure Syria’s territorial integrity and achieve stability.

He explained that the meeting in Moscow provided an important opportunity to discuss bilateral cooperation issues, in addition to developments in Syria, including the importance of lifting the sanctions imposed on it.

Fidan added, “We’re committed to supporting the stability of the Syrian people and supporting efforts to achieve a political settlement that preserves Syria’s unity and sovereignty”.

The two ministers emphasized that the dialogue between Moscow and Damascus, with Ankara’s support, represents a step in the right direction toward strengthening regional security and reviving the political process, especially in light of the difficult humanitarian and economic conditions facing Syria.
