Several US soldiers were wounded in an attack on a military base in Iraq on Monday.

Hours earlier, rockets were fired at a base in Iraq housing where US troops are stationed, days after four pro-Iranian Iraqi fighters were killed in a US raid and amid fears of regional escalation.

A US military source said that the rockets were fired at Assad base in Anbar province, adding that some landed inside the base while one landed in a nearby village.

According to information, the base was targeted with at least two missiles.

These attacks were repeated shortly after the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement, but their frequency declined significantly later.

Monday’s attack comes as fears grow that Iran and its allies could attack Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, as well as a senior commander in Lebanese Hezbollah in Beirut’s southern suburb last week.

It also comes after US forces launched an airstrike on Tuesday night on pro-Iranian Iraqi fighters who were trying to launch drones that pose a threat to US and coalition forces, a US official said.

Iraqi sources said the raid left four people dead, the first by the Americans since February.
