What is happening in Kursk?
A fire broke out at a military air base in Russia’s Lipetsk region, about 300 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, after the area was attacked by Ukrainian drones overnight.
The regional Emergencies Ministry as saying that a fire broke out at a military airport in the Lipetsk region, without confirming whether the fire was the result of a Ukrainian attack.
The Lipetsk region, which is far from the Ukrainian border, saw a major drone attack on Thursday night, damaging a power station, the region’s governor, Igor Artamonov, said on Telegram.
He pointed out that the power was cut off to some homes, but he confirmed that electricity had later been restored to most of those affected.
Artamonov declared a state of emergency in the Lipetsk municipality and ordered the evacuation of four nearby villages to ensure the safety of residents, a measure that affected 416 households.
In another attack in the Belgorod region near the Ukrainian border, Russian air defenses shot down 29 Ukrainian drones, regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said, adding that there was material damage but no casualties.
In another development, Russian authorities declared a federal state of emergency in Kursk Oblast after a Ukrainian military incursion led to armed clashes between Russian and Ukrainian forces.
The clashes in the Kursk region were described as violent, and this Ukrainian attack is believed to represent a bold move aimed at achieving new progress in the conflict that has been ongoing since February 2022.
Reports indicate that more than a thousand Ukrainian soldiers supported by dozens of armored vehicles are participating in this surprise attack, while the Russian General Staff confirmed that it’s making every effort to repel this attack.
