Western Media: A secret nuclear deal between Iran and Russia terrifies the US and Britain
According to Bloomberg and the Guardian newspaper, the United States and Britain expressed their fears that Russia may have exchanged nuclear secrets with Iran in exchange for Tehran supplying Moscow with ballistic missiles to use in Ukraine.
This came during a summit held in Washington, DC, where British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and US President Joe Biden agreed to enhance military cooperation between the two countries in light of Iran’s efforts to enrich uranium to achieve its goal of building a nuclear bomb, according to the two reports.
British sources indicated that there are concerns about Iran’s trade in nuclear technology as part of its growing alliance with Moscow, according to the Guardian newspaper.
On a visit to London last week, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that Russia was sharing technology that Iran seeks, including nuclear and some space-related information, accusing both countries of destabilizing activities.
Britain, France and Germany warned last week that Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium had increased significantly without a credible civilian justification, and that significant quantities of uranium had been amassed that could be used to make a nuclear bomb.
It remains unclear how technically capable Iran is of building a nuclear weapon or how quickly it could do so.
Iran had struck a deal in 2015 to halt its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, but the deal was scrapped in 2018 by former US President Donald Trump.
In response, Iran breached the agreed limits on the amount of enriched uranium allowed.
Western concerns about Iran’s proximity to possessing a nuclear weapon continue, increasing tension in the Middle East, which is already witnessing tensions due to the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
After Russia’s war on Ukraine began, Iran began supplying Moscow with drones and missiles, and helped it build a factory to produce more of them.
Last April, Iran launched a missile and drone attack against Israel, but the attack was stopped with the help of the United States and the United Kingdom.
Blinken said in London last week that US intelligence had confirmed the delivery of the first batch of Iranian Fateh-360 missiles to Russia.
British Prime minister Keir Starmer arrived in Washington on Thursday for a private summit with President Biden at the White House, where they discussed the war in Ukraine, the crisis in the Middle East, Iran and the rivalry with China.
The meeting discussed the possibility of allowing Ukraine to use long-range Storm Shadow missiles against Russia, but no details were revealed after the meeting.
