Washington submitting a draft text to the United Nations that doesn’t refer to the unity of Ukrainian territories

The United States on Friday proposed to the UN General Assembly a draft resolution calling for a rapid end to the conflict in Ukraine without any reference to its territorial integrity.

As US President Donald Trump puts pressure on his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, the draft resolution calls for a swift end to the conflict and a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia, in a succinct formulation that differs significantly from previous Assembly texts that explicitly backed Ukraine.

Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia described the US draft resolution as a good idea, while noting that the text lacked any reference to the roots of the conflict.

The UN General Assembly meets on Monday to mark the third anniversary of the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

On this occasion, Ukraine and the Europeans have prepared a draft resolution that stresses the need to redouble diplomatic efforts to end the war this year, and refers to initiatives by several member states that have put forward their vision for a comprehensive and sustainable peace agreement.

The text also reiterates previous General Assembly demands for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine and an end to Russian attacks on Ukraine.

Previous texts on this issue received more than 140 votes in favor of the 193 members, however, Monday’s General Assembly is the first since Donald Trump returned to the White House.

On Friday, he sharply criticized the Ukrainian president, saying it was unnecessary for him to attend negotiations with Russia in which he had no cards.

The proposed US text on Friday, which is limited to 65 words, is likely to anger Europeans wary of the US-Russian dialogue on Ukraine.
