Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, asked President Donald Trump on Friday to lift US sanctions that affect peoples during a reception in Caracas for a delegation of Colombian ministers.

A day after canceling her scheduled trip to Colombia on security grounds, Rodríguez said that unilateral coercive measures against the people of Venezuela affect the people of Latin America, adding that “they also affect the Colombian economy, the Venezuelan economy, and our peoples”.

The United States imposed an oil embargo and sanctions on Venezuela in 2019 after President Nicolás Maduro’s 2018 presidential election was boycotted by the opposition.

After Maduro’s arrest in January, Washington eased sanctions, which a number of analysts believe could be lifted altogether in the near future.
