Türkiye works to speed up purchase of Eurofighter Typhoon fighters
A Turkish defense ministry official revealed on Thursday that Ankara is carrying out technical work aimed at accelerating its plan to purchase Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets.
Last year, Ankara announced negotiations with Britain and Spain, members of the Eurofighter alliance, to purchase Typhoon fighters, despite Germany’s opposition to the idea.
Since then, Türkiye has complained about the slow progress on this file due to Berlin’s hesitation.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met German Chancellor Olaf Scholz last month on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, and Scholz is scheduled to meet Erdogan on Saturday in Istanbul, where the fighter jets are expected to be on the agenda.
The Turkish Defense Ministry official told reporters, “Technical work related to the purchase of Eurofighter Typhoon fighters is currently underway, and this work aims to speed up the process, while no conditions have been put forward during this work”.
It’s noteworthy that the Eurofighter Typhoon fighters are manufactured by an alliance that includes Germany, Britain, Italy and Spain, represented by Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo.
Türkiye, a NATO member, recently secured a long-awaited deal with the United States to acquire 40 F-16 fighters and 79 upgrade kits for its existing aircraft.
