Turkish local elections: The Turkish President and the ruling Justice and Development Party suffer a major defeat and lose most of the major cities in the country
A historic victory for the Turkish opposition at the Turkish local elections, as the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) loses all major cities.
The head of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Özgür Özel said, that “voters chose to change the face of Türkiye after 22 years of dominance by the Justice and Development Party,” led by the Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The results showed a significant superiority and sweeping victory for the Republican People’s Party in the major cities, such as Ankara, Istanbul, Izmir, Bursa, Antalya and Adana in addition the CHP won 37.74% of the total votes, with 21 major cities in total.
For the first time in 22 years, the Republican People’s Party advanced in percentages throughout Türkiye, while the Justice and Development Party fell to second place.
The AKP has won 35,49% of the totals votes, taking 12 cities, while his ally the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) came at the fourth place, with total 4.98% of the total votes, and taking 8 cities.
It was noteworthy that the New Welfare Party, led by Dr. Fatih Necmettin Erbakan, achieved a total of 6.19% of the votes, and took over the municipalities of both Yozgat and Şanlıurfa, where it became the third party after the Republican People’s Party and the Justice and Development Party, at a time when the Good Party (İyi), led by it, Miracle Akşener, has declined with only achieving 3.77% of the votes, and only presiding over one state, which was Nevşehir.
The Democratic Green Left Party (DEM Parti), which has left-liberal tendencies and is sympathetic to the Kurds, also maintained the majority of its traditional states in eastern Türkiye, achieving a total of 5.63% and presiding over seven cities.
