Turkish Foreign Minister: President Erdogan’s goal is to bring together Putin and Zelensky
The Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s main goal in the war between Russia and Ukraine is to ensure that the two countries’ presidents, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky meet.
This came in statements he made, Saturday, during his visit to the Turkish Consulate General in Los Angeles, after completing his talks in New York on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Cavusoglu pointed out that Türkiye is making unremitting efforts to end the Russian-Ukrainian war, and hasn’t lost hope despite the two sides’ distance from the solution.
He continued: “The main objective of our president is to bring them together, Putin and Zelensky.
It is necessary to take steps to increase confidence in this framework to resolve the political process… We played an important role in the prisoner exchange case recently”.
He stressed that the role played by Türkiye in the grain export crisis was the latest breakthrough in the world, and contributed to reducing grain prices for the first time since the 2008 crisis.
On July 22, Türkiye, Russia, Ukraine and the United Nations signed the “Document on the Initiative for the Safe Shipping of Grain and Foodstuffs from Ukrainian Ports” during a meeting hosted by Istanbul.
On February 24, Russia launched a military attack on Ukraine, followed by international rejection and economic sanctions against Moscow, which required to end its operation Kyiv’s abandonment of plans to join military entities, which the latter considers an interference in its sovereignty.
