Trump: War against Iran is just a minor diversion
President Donald Trump said Thursday that a US war against Iran was “just a minor diversion” during his second term, amid recent polls showing the war is unpopular with the American people.
a meeting held in Las Vegas, Nevada to promote the “Tip Tax Elimination Act” for workers, which was passed as part of last year’s major tax reform, Trump boasted about his economic accomplishments since returning to office in 2025.
“We’ve achieved the best economy in the history of our country… Despite the slight detour in beautiful Iran,” Trump told a crowd of supporters.
He added, “But we had to do it, because otherwise, bad things could happen, very bad things,” referring to Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
Trump asserted, “We’re on the verge of victory,” adding, “We spent 17 years in Vietnam, five years in Afghanistan, and much more in various other places… As for us, I said we were only there for two months”.
A poll conducted by Ipsos last weekend showed that 51% of more than 1,000 participants believed that a war with Iran was not worth the high costs associated with it.
Less than a quarter of those surveyed, 24%, said the opposite. as another poll conducted by Quinnipiac University and published Wednesday showed that 65% of American voters blame Trump for the recent rise in gasoline prices due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The same poll reported that only 36% of voters were satisfied with Trump’s handling of Iran, compared to 58% who expressed dissatisfaction.
The US blockade of Iranian ports will continue until the two countries reach an agreement to end the war in the Middle East, despite Tehran’s announcement that it would reopen the Strait of Hormuz during the ceasefire period.
Trump wrote on Truth Social, “The Strait of Hormuz is now fully open… but the naval blockade will remain fully in place with respect to Iran exclusively, until our discussion with Iran is 100 percent complete”.
He added that Iran is removing all its sea mines from the Strait of Hormuz with the support of the United States, without providing any details.
He wrote in a post on Truth Social, “Iran, with the help of the United States, has removed, or is in the process of removing, all the sea mines! Thank you!”
