Trump threatens the European Union and Canada with massive tariffs
US President Donald Trump threatened the European Union and Canada with strict measures against any cooperation between them that would harm the US economy, stressing that he would impose massive tariffs on them, far exceeding current tariffs.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “If the European Union cooperates with Canada to harm the American economy, we will impose very large tariffs on them, far in excess of what we are currently charging”.
The United States had previously imposed 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, and raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 20%.
Washington justified these measures as part of its efforts to combat illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking.
In addition, the United States has imposed tariffs on goods from the European Union and plans to apply similar tariffs to countries that impose higher tariffs on US products than their own.
In response to these measures, Canada and China imposed counter-tariffs, while the European Union threatened to take retaliatory measures in April.
