The information regarding the alleged Turkish military base which could be established in central Syria?
Recently, and after the last visit of the Syrian transitional president Ahmed al Sharaa to Türkiye, and the multiple visits of several Turkish officials, including appointing a military attaché at the Turkish embassy in Damascus so fast by Ankara, led the media to report based on several resources, that the Syrian government has allocated a strategic military base near the city of Palmyra in the Homs countryside to Türkiye, as part of new arrangements that are said to be potentially changing the balance of military power in the country.
Several media outlets, including Turkish claimed that the base would be the size of the US Ramstein base in Germany, making it one of Türkiye’s largest military facilities outside its borders.
Reports also claimed that Türkiye informed major international powers, including the United Nations, that it considered the base as a “Turkish sovereign territory” and warned that any attack on it would be met with a direct military response.
However, no confirmation was reported, the Syrian Ministry of Defense didn’t issue any statement through its official outlets confirming these reports.
During his previous visit to Türkiye, Ahmed al Sharaa discussed with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, a joint defense agreement.
The agreement includes the establishment of Turkish air bases in central Syria and the training of the new Syrian army.
According to sources, the agreement may allow Ankara to establish air bases in Syria and use Syrian airspace for military purposes, in addition to playing a significant role in training the new Syrian army.
