Trump pledges to defend Christianity against the left
Former US President Donald Trump promised to use a second term in the White House to defend Christian values, and suggested that he would protect the central symbol of religion, warning the Conference of Religious Media Channels that the left wanted to “tear down crosses”.
Trump spoke at the International Christian Media Conference for Religious Broadcasters on Thursday in Nashville, Tennessee, and promised that “no one will touch the cross of Christ under the Trump administration”.
Trump told hundreds of cheering attendees, “Remember that every communist regime throughout history has tried to eliminate churches, just as every fascist regime has tried to co-opt and control them… In America, the radical left is trying to do both”.
“They want to tear down crosses wherever they can and cover them with social justice flags, but no one will touch the cross of Christ under the Trump administration, I swear to you,” Trump added.
This comes at a time when senior conservatives are increasingly calling on Trump to openly build his second term around Christian values, if he wins.
The Republican presidential candidate used his speech in South Carolina to boast that during his first term he had done “more to support religious freedom than any administration in history”.
Tennessee holds its primary elections on Super Tuesday, March 5. Some religious leaders were initially reluctant to support Trump when he first ran for president in 2016, but they are now part of his most loyal base, which has the slogan “Make America Great Again”.
On the same context, Trump won South Carolina’s Republican primary on Saturday, easily beating former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley in her home state and further consolidating his path to a third straight GOP nomination.
Trump has now swept every contest that counted for Republican delegates, adding to previous wins in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and the US Virgin Islands.
On the other hand, Haley is facing growing pressure to leave the race but says she’s not going anywhere despite losing the state where she was governor from 2011 to 2017.
Haley has vowed to stay in the race through at least the batch of primaries on March 5, known as Super Tuesday, but was unable to dent Trump’s momentum in her home state despite holding far more campaign events and arguing that the indictments against Trump will hamstring him against Biden.
Thus, and based on the current outcomes, it became clear that the 2020 rematch between Trump and Current US President Joe Biden is becoming increasingly inevitable.
