US President Donald Trump stated that it’s only a matter of time before Nicolas Maduro remains in power in Venezuela, indicating that his days are numbered.

In an interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes, Trump said he doesn’t expect his country to wage war on Venezuela, but stressed that Washington believes the Maduro regime is on its way out.

The United States accuses the Venezuelan government of turning the country into a “narco-state” by cooperating with Colombian gangs to smuggle drugs into America and Europe within what is known as the “Cartel of the Suns,” which, according to Washington, includes high-ranking officials from the Venezuelan regime.

US press reports, including the Washington Post, indicated that Maduro attempted to contact Moscow to obtain military support, including missiles, radars, and advanced aircraft, amid escalating US pressure and the deployment of American forces in the Caribbean.

Over the past few months, the Trump administration has taken a series of escalating measures against Venezuela, including doubling the financial reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest to $50 million, as well as strengthening the US military presence around the country and deploying the largest aircraft carrier near the Venezuelan coast.

For his part, Maduro denied the US accusations, describing them as a pretext for waging a war aimed at stealing Venezuela’s oil wealth.

In remarks from Caracas, he asserted that his country was innocent of drug trafficking, accusing Washington of seeking to justify direct military intervention under the guise of combating organized crime.
