US President Donald Trump threatened on Tuesday to impose economic sanctions on Russia if it doesn’t show a willingness to conclude a peace agreement with Ukraine.

During a cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump stressed his desire to reach a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine as soon as possible.

“Therefore, a meeting must be held between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky,” he said.

Asked about Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s comments that Putin wouldn’t sign an agreement with Zelensky because he consider him as illegitimate.

Trump said, “It doesn’t matter what they say… Everyone’s just showing off… It’s all nonsense”.

He added, “I want to complete this agreement… It’s a very serious matter… While it’s true that a world war won’t break out, it will be an economic war… This situation will be bad for Russia, and I don’t want that,” reiterating his statements regarding imposing economic sanctions on Moscow.

Trump also stated that Zelensky isn’t completely innocent, noting that his entry into a war with a country 15 times larger than Ukraine was wrong from the start.

In a related context, US envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff expressed his belief that Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, saying, “Trump has stopped seven wars to date”.

On Monday, Trump warned Russia of “serious consequences” if it refused to reach a peace agreement with Ukraine.
