Trump: Iran wants to conclude a deal with the United States and we are currently conducting negotiations
US President Donald Trump said that Iran wants to conclude a deal with the United States, and that his administration is currently conducting active negotiations with Tehran.
This came in a statement he made to reporters, at the White House, on Tuesday evening.
“We’ll see if a deal can be reached with Iran… They had a chance to reach an agreement a while ago, but it didn’t come to fruition… They want to negotiate, and we are negotiating with them now”.
Trump avoided answering a question about where the talks with Iran would take place.
On Tuesday, Iranian President Masoud Pezshakian announced that he had instructed Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to start negotiations with the United States.
Pressure from the United States and Israel on Iran has recently escalated with the outbreak of popular demonstrations in late December to protest the deteriorating economic and living conditions.
Iran considers that the United States seeks through sanctions, pressure, and provoking unrest to provide a pretext for foreign intervention in order to bring about regime change in the country, and vows a comprehensive and unprecedented response to any attack targeting it, even if its limited.
Israel and its ally the United States accuse Iran of seeking to produce nuclear weapons, while Tehran says its nuclear program is designed for peaceful purposes, including electricity generation.
