US President Donald Trump has complained about the lack of support from NATO countries regarding the Iran, saying, “I think NATO is making a very stupid mistake”.

This came during his meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin at the Oval Office in Washington.

Trump criticized NATO and some European countries that have announced that they will not support the United States, especially on the issue of the Strait of Hormuz, saying these countries have provided a bad test in terms of the security of the strait.

While Trump stressed that the United States needs no one to ensure that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, he expressed disappointment with the alliance’s position, saying, “I am very disappointed with NATO… We don’t need them, but they should have been there”.

Trump noted that the whole of Europe supported the start of attacks on Iran, but when it came to military support, no one supported him, stressing that he was disappointed repeatedly in this regard.

The US president recalled the great support they have given to NATO throughout the Russia-Ukraine war, saying: “We helped them in Ukraine but they didn’t help us in Iran… I think NATO is making a very stupid mistake”.

Trump said only the Gulf states and Israel had provided support for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, adding, “There is a lot of support from the Middle East… Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and, of course, Israel, are providing strong support”.

Trump also claimed that they had largely eliminated Iran’s military capabilities, adding, “The Iranians can always lay mines in the strait, and that’s just like an act of terrorism… That’s why we thought Europe would help with this because they have minehunters”.

Earlier, Trump warned that the failure of NATO allies to secure the Strait of Hormuz would be “very bad for NATO’s future”.

On March 2, Iran announced that the Strait of Hormuz was closed, and that it would attack any ships trying to cross this strategic corridor.

Asked if the United States was considering withdrawing from NATO because of its lack of support for Iran in the country, Trump said: “They should think about it, but I don’t have anything like that in mind right now”.

Trump made it clear that Britain wanted to support the United States too late, and that this meant nothing to them.
