Members of the United Nations Security Council on Monday expressed their opposition to the Russian draft resolution on the situation in Gaza, which strongly condemns violence directed against civilians.

The project was voted on with 5 votes in favor, namely Russia, China, the UAE, Gabon, and Mozambique, and 4 opposing votes, namely the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Japan, while 6 members abstained from voting.

However, the five votes that supported the project weren’t enough to pass it.

After the vote, the Russian delegate to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, described the Security Council as “hostage to the goals of Western countries,” noting that this was the only reason that led to the failure of the project to send a clear and strong collective message aimed at calming the situation.
