The United States opens its first permanent military garrison in Poland
Poland celebrated on Tuesday marking the deployment of the first US military garrison in this country, which is a sign of NATO unity in the face of Russian aggression, according to the US ambassador to Warsaw.
“It shows that we are here to stay,” US Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski, said during an official ceremony.
“This is a message to the entire world that the United States is committed to Poland and to NATO… We’re united in the face of Russian aggression.”
This US military garrison, the eighth in Europe, will be responsible for coordinating support for US forces deployed in Poland and throughout NATO’s eastern flank.
The garrison was established by order of the President of the United States in the year 2022 and will serve as the headquarters for the Fifth Corps of the US Army.
More than 10,000 US troops are currently stationed in Poland, through which most of the military equipment destined for Ukraine passes.
“We very much appreciate the permanent presence of American forces in our country,” Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak, said.
“We especially appreciate it in the current situation in Europe, with Russia invading Ukraine and trying to rebuild its empire”.
He added, “The command of the Fifth Corps in the US Army has begun to operate, so the US ground forces are commanded from Poland in the eastern wing of NATO,” stressing that the garrison is important for the security of our country and the security of the entire eastern wing of NATO.
