The United States announced on Thursday its approval to sell up to 600 Patriot missiles worth $5 billion to Germany, which had delivered several air defense systems to Ukraine.

“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by improving the security of a NATO ally that is an important force for political and economic stability in Europe,” the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement.

The statement added that the new deal will improve Germany’s ability to confront current and future threats, and increase the defensive capabilities of its army.

The State Department has approved the potential sale to Germany, and the Defense Security Cooperation Agency on Thursday submitted the required notification to Congress to approve the deal.

Germany has provided several Patriot systems to Ukraine, which faces repeated Russian missile and drone attacks targeting its infrastructure, leaving it in dire need of additional air defenses.

After the 2022 Russia-Ukraine war, Berlin abandoned its traditional pacifist stance and became the second largest supplier of military aid to Kiev, after Washington.
