The UN Security Council will vote on Monday on a US resolution regarding Gaza
The UN Security Council will vote on Monday on a US resolution endorsing President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan, diplomatic sources said Friday.
The United States and a number of its partners, including Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, called on the Security Council on Friday to expedite the adoption of the draft resolution.
The United States, Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Jordan and Türkiye expressed joint support for the US draft resolution, which gives a mandate to form an international stabilization force, among other things, and expressed hope it will be adopted quickly.
The Americans last week formally launched negotiations within the 15-member UN Security Council on a text that would follow up on a ceasefire in the two-year-old war between Israel and Hamas, and in support of Trump’s plan.
“We affirm that this is a sincere effort, and that the plan provides a practical path toward peace and stability, not only between Israelis and Palestinians, but for the entire region,” Washington and its partners said in the statement.
The draft resolution, welcomes the establishment of the Peace Council, a transitional governing body for Gaza that Trump will theoretically chair, with its mandate lasting until the end of 2027.
The resolution authorizes member states to form an Interim International Stabilization Force to work with Israel, Egypt and the newly trained Palestinian police to help secure border areas and demilitarize the Gaza Strip.
Unlike previous drafts, this resolution points to the possibility of a future Palestinian state.
Friday’s joint statement came as Russia circulated a rival draft resolution to Security Council members, which doesn’t provide for the establishment of a peace council or the immediate deployment of an international force in Gaza.
On the other hand, the Russian project welcomes the initiative that led to the ceasefire but doesn’t name Trump.
The UN secretary-general is calling for options for implementing the terms of the peace plan and for an immediate report that also addresses the potential for the deployment of an international stabilization force in Gaza.
The United States has described the ceasefire in Gaza as fragile, and warned on Thursday of the dangers of not adopting its draft.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz wrote in the Washington Post that “any refusal to support this resolution is a vote for the continued rule of Hamas ‘terrorists’ or for a return to war with Israel, condemning the region and its people to remain in perpetual conflict”.
“Any deviation from this path, whether on the part of those who want to play political games or relive the past, will come at a real human cost,” he added.
While so far the council members appeared to support the principles of the peace plan, diplomatic sources indicated that there were several questions about the US text, particularly regarding the absence of a monitoring mechanism for the council, the role of the Palestinian Authority, and the details of the mandate of the Israeli security forces.
Russia’s mission to the United Nations said in a statement that its alternative proposal differs in terms of recognizing the principle of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian settlement.
