The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has become more specific about using Western long-range weapons inside Russia.

He says he wants to use them only against Russian military airfields, as this might lead to the lifting of Western embargoes.

Zelensky said he wanted Western long-range weapons to hit specific targets inside Russia, stressing that Ukrainians more than anyone want to end the war in their country, but not by destroying their state and culture.

Zelensky made the remarks while speaking to representatives of the Italian business community at the Cernobbio Forum overlooking Lake Como in northern Italy.

The Ukrainian president said that his country needs long-range weapons from international partners, stressing that his country wants to use these weapons only to strike military airports inside Russia.

“What we want is to use this long-range weapon to strike only (Russian) military airports, and just using this weapon that can operate at a distance of between 100 and 300 kilometers, that’s all, and there are no other ideas,” he said.

However, Kiev’s allies disagree with it on the use of long-range weapons and insist on a ban on their use inside Russia, and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that allowing strikes deep inside Russia using Western weapons wouldn’t change the course of the war.

Western powers fear that the use of long-range weapons to strike targets deep inside Russia could lead to a direct conflict with Moscow.

Indeed, Russia has repeatedly threatened to respond forcefully and painfully if Ukraine launches long-range attacks inside its territory.

Zelensky had earlier arrived in Italy from Germany, and the common goal of the two visits is the Ukrainian president’s demand from his Western allies for more weapons, especially long-range ones.

He added that his people have no choice but to “fight and defend their lives”.

He continued, “Our people are under constant threat from Russian missiles and drones every night and every day”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has been accused of trying to destroy Ukraine, saying he has done everything to deprive it of its independence and destroy its economy.
