The Turkish Foreign Ministry summons the Swedish ambassador after its defense minister’s talks with the SDF leadership
On Tuesday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned the Swedish ambassador to Ankara to protest against talks held by Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist with the leadership of the “Syria Democratic Forces”.
The Turkish Anadolu news Agency, which is close to the government, said that the Turkish Foreign Ministry had summoned Stockholm’s ambassador to Ankara, Staffan Hirstrium, as it strongly condemned the meeting of some Swedish ministers with terrorist leaders”.
This move comes after the Swedish Defense Minister held a meeting via video communication with the commander of the “Syria Democratic Forces”, Farhat Abdi Shaheen, where the Swedish Defense Minister announced his country’s readiness to support this organization.
The Turkish government considers the “Syria Democratic Forces” a terrorist organization, as it consists primarily of Kurdish People’s Protection Units, which, according to Ankara’s account, represents the Syrian arm of the Kurdistan Workers Party, which the Turkish authorities have been fighting inside and outside the country for more than three decades.
