Syrian President Ahmad al Sharaa issued a decision on Wednesday to form a preparatory committee for the National Dialogue Conference.

This came according to what the presidency of the republic reported on its account on X.

The decision stated that based on the supreme national interest, and in response to the necessity of this historical stage, and in a manner that includes the aspirations of the Syrian people, we in the presidency of the republic decide to form a preparatory committee for the national dialogue.

The decision also stipulated the assignment of 7 people to the committee’s membership, namely “Hassan al-Daghim, Maher Alloush, Muhammad Mustat, Mustafa al Musa, Youssef al Hajr, Hind Qabwat, and Huda Atassi”.

Last January, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani announced that his government was delaying holding the National Dialogue Conference, which it had previously announced, out of its keenness to form an expanded preparatory committee for this conference that would include all segments and regions of the country.

The Syrian caretaker government had previously revealed that it was planning to hold the National Dialogue Conference, which it considered to be a cornerstone in establishing the political identity of the future Syria.

It’s expected to include more than 1,000 people from different segments of Syrian society.

For its part, the United States called on Wednesday for a comprehensive political transition in Syria to prevent the country from becoming a source of terrorism.

This came in a post by the Washington Embassy in Damascus on X, on the occasion of the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism, which falls on February 12 of each year.

The US embassy said, “On the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism that leads to terrorism, we highlight the need for a comprehensive transition in Syria that ensures that the new government prevents Syria from becoming a source of international terrorism”.

It indicated that this step deprives what it called “external actors with malicious intentions from exploiting the transition in Syria to achieve their own goals,” and stressed “the importance of Syria not posing a threat to its neighbors”.

The upcoming National Dialogue Conference, which is expected to include more than a thousand people from various segments of society, according to a statement by the Syrian presidency.
