The Russian president approves a naval strategy until 2050
Russian presidential aide Nikolai Patrushev announced on Monday that President Vladimir Putin has officially approved the Russian Navy’s development strategy until 2050, stressing that its the first document of its kind in modern Russian history.
In an interview with local Russian newspaper, Patrushev explained that the decision to develop this strategy was made in July 2023, during a meeting in the Kremlin, based on Putin’s directives.
He added, “The Ministry of Defense prepared the draft law, which was subsequently reviewed by the Russian Maritime Council, taking into account proposals submitted by federal agencies and organizations”.
Patrushev indicated that the final version of the strategy was submitted to Putin, who formally approved it on May 30.
The Russian official emphasized that developing a strong and modern fleet is one of Russia’s top priorities, asserting that Russia is gradually regaining its position as one of the greatest naval powers in the world under the new strategy, which is based on a comprehensive assessment of the experience of special military operations, as he was referring to the war in Ukraine.
According to Patrushev, the strategy includes an analysis of the evolution of the global military and political situation, the likelihood and nature of armed conflicts, and the capabilities of the leading naval powers.
It also assesses the current state and capabilities of the Russian Navy, and sets out the main requirements for the future combat formation of the fleet and its missions in peacetime and wartime.
The head of the Russian Maritime Administration emphasized that the development of the Navy cannot be achieved without a long-term vision of future scenarios for the development of the situation in the global oceans, a clear understanding of future challenges and threats, and a precise definition of the objectives the fleet must achieve.
It’s worth noting that, since 2024, command of the Russian fleets has been directly under the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy.
The Russian Navy comprises the Northern, Baltic, Black Sea, and Pacific Fleets, in addition to the Caspian Sea Flotilla.
In the Ukrainian confrontation, Russia launched a record number of 479 explosive drones into Ukraine overnight Sunday, the Ukrainian air force said, in fresh attacks that came as Moscow continues to reject Kyiv’s calls for a ceasefire.
The Ukrainian Air Force said in a statement that it intercepted 460 drones and 19 of the 20 missiles launched by Russia overnight.
