The Russian army tests combat readiness of nuclear missile unit
The Russian army is testing the combat readiness of a unit equipped with Yars intercontinental ballistic missiles in an area northwest of Moscow, news agencies quoted the Russian Defense Ministry as saying on Friday.
The Yars missiles, which can be deployed in launch silos or mounted on mobile launchers, have a range of 11,000 kilometers and are capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads.
Russia has conducted a series of nuclear drills this year, in what security analysts say are signals aimed at deterring the West from further intervention in the war in Ukraine.
Throughout the war, Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued repeated statements reminding people that Russia has the world’s largest nuclear arsenal, but he has insisted that it doesn’t need to resort to nuclear weapons to win in Ukraine.
