The New York Times quoted Iranian officials as saying that Tehran had asked Russia advanced air defense systems in preparation for a possible war with Israel.

The officials said Russia had already begun delivering Iran advanced radars and air defense equipment.

Earlier on Monday, Russian Security Council Secretary-General Sergei Shoigu arrived in Tehran for talks with senior Iranian officials.

The visit comes in the wake of the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, head of Hamas’ political bureau, a few days ago in the Iranian capital Tehran.

The Israel, which has not officially claimed responsibility for Haniyeh’s assassination, has stepped up the alert of its forces and vital facilities to the maximum degree in anticipation of a response from Iran.

Expectations have mounted that Iran will launch retaliatory strikes against Israel in the coming hours in response to Haniyeh’s assassination.
