Burkina Faso: Traore announce foiling a coup attempt
The interim president of Burkina Faso, captain Ibrahim Traore, announced the thwarting of an attempt to destabilize, adding that officers and soldiers in collusion with terrorists, were planning in order to seize power.
“The destabilization plan also included the recruitment of agents into the ranks of the Burkinabe armed forces,” Traore said Tuesday, on the occasion of the raising of the national flag of Burkina Faso.
Ibrahim Traore explained that cowardly assassinations and attacks were being prepared within the armed forces, stressing that the situation has been contained, and many people have been arrested”.
Traore warned those who behind the destabilization projects, that there would be not a single moment’s hesitation in the action necessary to achieve the best interests of Burkina Faso.
According to local media, several officers who had left for training or were on assignment outside Burkina Faso were ordered to return to the country, and many of them were arrested immediately after disembarking from the plane at Ouagadougou International Airport.
French media, citing security sources, reported that the arrest of Lieutenant Colonel Yves Didier bamoni, the former commander of anti-terrorist operations, is linked to the case of the coup attempt.
Traore announced on several previous occasions the thwarting of coup attempts, and there were several demonstrations in support of him, and against the overthrow of his existing regime since September 30, 2022, where he and other military personnel overthrew Colonel Paul Henri Sandaogo Damiba.
