German authorities have decided to condition the granting of their citizenship to people who recognize Israel’s right to exist under changes to the country’s citizenship law.

A statement from Germany’s interior ministry said the legislation came into force on Thursday and that the citizenship exam would include new questions on the topics of anti-Semitism and the right of the State of Israel to exist and Jewish life in the country.

The legislation is part of a German reform of citizenship as the government struggles with rising anti-Semitism, rising far-right popularity and a fierce debate over Berlin’s reaction to Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip.

The center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) called for implementation of the law at the federal level last year and the idea was well received by other parties in the German Bundestag.
