Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the readiness of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to discuss the settlement of the situation in Ukraine with President Vladimir Putin is an important signal.

The Kremlin representative criticized the refusal of other Western countries to hold such a dialogue with the Russian side, considering it unconstructive.

“We hear the words coming from Berlin – Scholz’s words about readiness to engage in dialogue… These are important words, because until recently Germany was among the rest of the collective West that completely ruled out any contacts with President Putin… We said that this position is futile,” Peskov added.

Peskov continued, saying, “There is no doubt that Scholz’s current readiness for dialogue is something that deserves to be welcomed”.

Earlier this month, a German government source told reporters that the German chancellor was willing to hold a phone conversation with the Russian president.

According to several German media, Chancellor Scholz intends to hold phone talks with the Russian president before the G20 summit in Brazil next November.
