The Israeli military revealed Wednesday evening that the recently intercepted Iranian missile may have been equipped with a warhead weighing more than a ton, making it more destructive than the conventional Iranian Shahab-3 missiles used in recent attacks.
An Israeli army statement explained that Iran had launched several missiles in recent days carrying twice the usual number of explosives, including the missile intercepted last night.
According to Israeli military source as saying that air defense systems are capable of dealing with various types of missiles, including those equipped with heavy warheads, stressing that recent days have seen the interception of missiles with double the destructive power.
For its part, Iranian media reported that the missile used was a “Khorramshahr” missile, believed to be equipped with an explosive warhead weighing up to 1.5 tons.
However, Israeli military estimates place its weight at slightly more than a ton.
By comparison, Iran’s Shahab missiles typically carry warheads weighing between 500 and 700 kg.
However, Tehran has made improvements to this missile system to enhance its range and speed, making it more dangerous in military confrontations.
The Israeli military reported that it analyzed several missile interceptions over the past week, and found that many of them carried warheads much larger than the usual range of the Shahab-3 missile.
Its currently being assessed whether the rocket that targeted a building in Bat Yam contained a large warhead.
However, the military stressed that its detection and interception systems operated effectively, unaffected by the size of the warhead.
The statement indicated that the missile was successfully intercepted using the Arrow 3 system, but its large size required additional support from the Iron Dome system, which carried out secondary interceptions to neutralize the large fragments.
In this regard, all Israeli air defense systems successfully performed their missions accurately, according to Israeli military sources.
